APPLE BARS 
2 1/2 c. flour
1 c. shortening (lard works best)
2 tbsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt

Blend first four ingredients as you would a pie crust.

1 egg yolk
2/3 c. milk

Beat 2 egg yolks; add milk and whisk until combined. Mix this into flour mixture.

Roll out 1/2 of dough. Put into 15 1/2" x 10 1/2" x 1" sheet.

1 c. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
3 apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced

Combine cinnamon with sugar. Toss apples in mixture. Spread apple mixture over crust.

Roll out remaining dough and cover crust and apples. Seal edges.

Beat egg whites until frothy and cover top (or brush on).

Bake at 375°F for 45 minutes or until bubbly and cooked through.

Combine powdered sugar and a little milk and drizzle over while bars are still warm.
