SCONES
3 c. flour
1/3 c. sugar
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
3/4 tsp. salt
3/4 c. cold butter, cut in sm. pieces
1 tsp. grated orange peel
3/4 c. raisins, dates or currants
1 c. buttermilk
1/4 c. cream or milk
1/4 c. sugar + 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Sift flour, baking powder, soda and salt. Blend in large bowl. Use pastry cutter to cut in butter. The mixture should resemble cornmeal. Stir in orange peel. Make well in center of the mixture, add buttermilk all at once. Stir mixture with a fork until dough cleans side of bowl.

With your hands gather dough into a ball; turn onto a lightly floured board. Roll or pat into a circle 1/2" thick. Using a 2 1/2" heart or other shape, cut into individual scones. Place 1 1/2" apart on lightly greased baking sheet. Use a pastry brush, brush cream or milk on the top of scone, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Bake at 425 degrees for 12 minutes.
