RAISED DONUTS | |
1 qt. hot water 1 pkg. dry yeast 1 tsp. vanilla 2 eggs, well beaten 1 c. lard or shortening 1 c. sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 3-4 lb. flour Put lard in large mixing bowl. Add hot water. Mix until lard is melted. Soften yeast in 1/2 cup warm water. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix well. Stir in sugar and salt. Stir in yeast mixture. Add flour, a little at a time until a firm consistency. Turn out on floured board. Knead. Let rise in a covered, greased bowl (2 hours). This may now be used to make hot rolls or rolled out and cut as donuts. To make donuts, fry in an electric skillet, browning each side. Take out and drain on paper towels. Immediately glaze with a mixture of powdered sugar and water. If making hot rolls, place each roll in greased pans. Let rise then bake at 350 degrees until browned. Using pastry brush, brush tops with butter as soon as out of the oven. Makes 4-5 dozen rolls. |
