APPLE CRUMBS 
Cook until soft but chunks approximately 8 apples (2 pounds). Peel and core, cut small pieces.

1/2 c. sugar
1/4 c. water
1 tbsp. lemon juice
2 tsp. cinnamon

Set aside to cool.

CRUMB MIXTURE:

Mix together:

2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
3/4 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening or butter
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla

Press 1/2 crumb mixture on bottom of greased 9 x 9 inch pan (press approximately 1/4 inch against bottom and sides). Top with apples, then remaining crumbs. Bake at 350 degrees approximately 45-60 minutes until golden brown. Serve cold squares or slightly warm with ice cream on top. Cool in pan.
