HOPPING JOHN 
2 c. black-eyed peas
3/4 c. raw rice
1 tsp. black pepper
1/2 c. bacon or ham grease

Cook peas until tender, start with cold water enough to cover peas. Add 3/4 cup raw rice and fats, salt and pepper. Cook on slow heat until rice is done. Good with fresh sausage, cole slaw, and hot corn bread.
