MRS. B.'S GUM DROP FRUIT CAKE 
2 lbs. gum drops cut into fingertip size pieces
1 c. sugar
2 eggs, beaten well
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 lb. white raisins
1 tsp. salt
1 c. butter
1 1/2 c. sweetened applesauce
1 tsp. cloves
1 1/2 c. chopped mixed nuts
4 c. all purpose flour

Cut candies into fingertip size pieces and set aside. Cream butter; add sugar and mix. Add eggs, applesauce and baking soda. Mix flour (2 cups only) and spices, add to mixture. Sift remaining 2 cups flour over raisins, gumdrops and nuts. Mix with hands so that nothing is sticking together. Carefully add to batter. Grease and flour pans. Pour batter into pans. Glaze with beaten egg and decorate with almonds and maraschino cherries if desired. Bake at 275 degrees for 1 to 2 hours depending on size of pan.
