BLACK MIDNIGHT CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/4 c. sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
1/2 c. cocoa
1 c. hot water
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream shortening and sugar. Blend in eggs. Stir hot water and cocoa together. Sift flour, salt, soda and baking powder. Mix all together slowly. Bake in 2 9 inch round cake pans at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Frost as desired. (Grandma said she caught Grandpa with this cake.) Makes 2 9-inch layers.
