HERMAN 
STARTER:

1 c. flour
1 c. milk
1/2 c. sugar

Mix all ingredients thoroughly and refrigerate.

Stir each day for four days.

Day five, remove Herman from the refrigerator and add:

1 c. flour
1/2 c. sugar

Mix thoroughly and refrigerate.

Continue to stir each day and return to refrigerator.

On day 10 (counting the day you received him) add:

1 c. flour
1/2 c. sugar

Measure out one cup of Herman to give to a friend and keep 1 cup for yourself (this you place in large bowl and start day one all over again).

Prepare remaining batter for baking:

A. Grease and flour 9"x13" pan or 2 bread pans.

B. Set oven at 350 degrees.

C. Add the following to your bowl of Herman:

2 eggs
1 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1-2 tsp. cinnamon
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. baking powder
Pinch of salt

D. Mix all the ingredients together. Then add any of the following ingredients or nothing.

1 cup raisins (plumped with boiling water and drained)
1 cup chopped nuts
1 large can crushed pineapple, cranberries, bananas, etc

E. Beat all ingredients together and pour into pan (or pans).

F. Topping:

1 c. brown sugar
1 tbsp. cinnamon
1/4 c. butter

Mix together with fork and sprinkle on top of each loaf.

G. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 50 minutes (depending on pan size).
