LAYER CAKE DEVIL'S FOOD | |
2 c. plain flour 1 tsp. baking soda 3/4 tsp. salt 1/2 c. Crisco 1 1/3 c. sugar 2 eggs 1/2 c. cocoa 1 c. + 2 tbsp. buttermilk 1 tsp. vanilla Sift flour once, measure, add soda and salt and sift together 3 times. Cream Crisco and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, beating well. Add cocoa which has been sifted, all dry ingredients and milk. Add all at once. Mix until flour is wet, then add vanilla and mix briskly until it looks like chocolate ice cream. Bake in 3 (10 inch) layers at 325 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes. FROSTING FOR LAYER CAKE DEVIL'S FOOD: 1 box confectioners' sugar 1 lg. pinch of salt 1/2 c. cocoa 5 tbsp. sweet milk 1 stick butter, softened 1 tsp. vanilla Measure all ingredients into mixing bowl and mix until smooth. Spread between layers and on outside. |
