WHIRLIGIG COOKIE 
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. white sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar (packed)
1/2 c. peanut butter
1 egg, unbeaten
1 1/4 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate bits

Cream shortening, sugars and peanut butter thoroughly. Add egg and vanilla; beat until light and fluffy.

Sift flour, salt and baking soda - add to egg mixture and blend well. Roll dough into oblong 1/4 inch thick.

Melt chocolate bits and spread on rolled dough. Roll up like a jelly roll and chill. Slice 1/4 inch thick. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 8-12 minutes at 350 degrees. Yields approximately 36 cookies.

Let cookies set a while after removing from oven before placing cookies on cooling racks.
