MOLASSES CRINKLES OR FRUIT BARS
Cream well:

1 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. shortening or butter
1 egg
4 tbsp. molasses

Add:

1/4 tsp. salt
2 1/2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger

Cream butter and sugar; add egg and molasses. Stir together dry ingredients to mix well; add to sugar mixture, stirring until combined.

Chill at least 1 hour or more.

For crinkles: Shape dough into balls about the size of a walnut. Dip top of balls into sugar

For fruit bars: Nuts, raisins, dates and other dried fruit should be stirred into the dough. Form dough into rows about 1 inch wide and 1/2 inch thick. Sprinkle water on top of cookie, then sugar.

Bake at 350°F for 12-15 minutes.

Molasses Crinkles or Fruit Bars

No chilling necessary. For bars, don't worry about forming into rows. Just spread into a 13"X9" pan (greased, sprinkle with water and a thick coating of sugar to form a thin, crispy crust) and bake 18 minutes. Also, if you don't add raisins (3/4 - 1 cup) they won't be "Fruit Bars."
