MOM PECKINS' CARAMEL-APPLE BARS 
1 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. butter
1/4 c. Crisco
1 3/4 c. flour
1 1/2 c. dry oats
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda

Mix brown sugar, butter and shortening. Stir in flour, oats, salt and baking soda. Remove 2 cups mixture and reserve for top. Press remaining mixture in UNGREASED 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan.

FILLING:

4 1/2 c. chopped apples
3 tbsp. flour
14 oz. caramels

Toss apples and 3 tablespoons flour. Spread over crust. Heat caramels over low heat, stirring occasionally until melted. Pour over apples. Top with reserved mixture. Press SLIGHTLY down. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 25-30 minutes. Cut into bars. Remove from pan and refrigerate.
