Mix until solids dissolved. Pour into large jar with lid. Add pickles (8 to 12). Let stand on sink for 4 days, mixing daily.

First Day: Heat water to boiling ... and water bath. Heat rind and syrup to boiling. If desired, add 1 to 2 drops of red or green food coloring.

Put cut cucumbers in lime ... mixture and again bring to a boil. Place pickles in syrup, and simmer 3 minutes. Pack into hot jars. Makes 5 quarts.

Make brine of 1 pint ... drain and split pickles. Cover again with alum ... over pickles. Reheat syrup add 1 cup sugar until 14 days have passed.

Cover pickles with brine. Let stand 1 week in crock. On eighth day, pour off brine. Cover ... brine and seal. The alum will keep pickles crisp.

Wash cucumber thoroughly and remove ... stand for 10 days. Take out of jar ... one time a day for 4 days. On fourth day put into jars and seal.
