3 tbsp. sugar
1/2 c. cornstarch
2 c. cold water
Food coloring, several colors
Liquid dish detergent

Mix 3 tablespoons sugar and 1/2 cup cornstarch together in a medium saucepan over low heat. Add 2 cups cold water and continue stirring until the mixture is thick. Remove from heat and divide the mixture up into four or five portions. Use a muffin tin or small cups or empty yogurt containers. Add a drop or two of food coloring and a drop of detergent to each portion. Stir and let cool.

Freezer paper makes excellent finger painting paper. You may keep the leftover paints, covered tightly, in the refrigerator.
