THREE - COLOR SUGAR COOKIES
1/2 c. butter or other soft shortening
1 c. granulated sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
1 1/2 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp. double acting baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt, optional
Red & blue food coloring

Put shortening in a bowl. Add sugar. Cream them together. Break an egg and put in creamed mixture. Add vanilla. Beat well until the batter is smooth.

Measure flour, baking powder and salt. Sift together. Dump half sifted ingredients into creamed mixture. Stir and stir. It will be hard, but keep on stirring. Add the rest of flour into batter. Keep mixing until you have a big lump of sticky dough.

Divide dough into 3 chunks of equal size. Using food coloring, make 1 chunk red, 1 chunk blue, keep 1 chunk white. Stick the balls together. Now stick balls of dough together into 1 big ball. Roll between your palms into a roll. Like a sausage. Wrap in wax paper or foil and refrigerate overnight.

Set oven at 400 degrees. To bake grease cookie sheets. Unwrap cookie roll and slice with a knife, about 1/4 inch thick. After 8 minutes, check cookies. Should be brown at edge.
