OLD FASHIONED BAKED CUSTARD
2 c. milk
1/2 c. sugar
4 sm. eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. nutmeg

Preheat oven to 450 degrees (have tea kettle boiling water while preheating oven). Heat milk and the sugar to the near-boiling point (but not boiling). Beat eggs to a froth. Add vanilla and powdered nutmeg. Remove the near-boiling mixture and stir eggs in briskly. Place in custard cups or a casserole. Set into large pan of 1 1/2 inches boiling water and place in oven quickly. Bake 10 minutes or until brown on top, then turn heat down to 350 degrees for 5 minutes. Let cool; but tasty when warm.
