GOULASH FROM NORTH GERMANY 
1 lb. stewing beef, cut in sm. pieces
1 med. chopped onion
1 med. carrot, grated
1 heaped tbsp. butter
1/2 tsp. seasoned salt
1 can consomme
1 bay leaf
1 fair-size dill pickle, chopped

Brown meat quickly in the hot butter. Turn down heat and add the onion, carrot, bay leaf and seasoning. Mix well and let simmer for a few minutes. Now add 1/2 can of consomme, let simmer again for a while and add the rest of the consomme. Let simmer again. Fill the can with water and add as needed. Simmer until meat is done, about 1 hour. Now add enough water to make gravy and taste for seasoning.
