BURNT SUGAR CAKE 
1 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 egg yolks
3 c. sifted cake flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. burnt sugar syrup plus milk to make 1 1/3 c.
2 tsp. vanilla
2 egg whites beaten stiff with 2 tbsp. sugar

Bake in 2 layers. Round 9 inch layer pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes. Ice with burnt sugar frosting.

BURNT SUGAR SYRUP:

2/3 cup sugar in saucepan or skillet. Melt over low heat until brown.

BURNT SUGAR ICING:

To remaining burnt sugar syrup add 2 cups sugar and 2/3 cup light cream. Cook until forms a ball in cold water. Cool 10 minutes. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla. Beat until it will spread.
