PHILLIP'S DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE 
1/2 c. cocoa
1/2 c. sugar
1 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix ingredients and boil 5 minutes; cool. 1/2 c. milk 1/2 c. butter 3 c. flour 1 tsp. baking soda 2 tbsp. boiling water 1/2 tsp. salt 2 eggs

Cream butter and sugar; add egg yolks. Measure flour after sifted and mix with salt. Add flour; small amount at a time, alternating with milk. Add first mixture to this. Then combine soda and boiling water and add. Last fold in egg whites which have been beaten to stand up but not dry. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until firm by touch. Use icing below for the round layer cake.

ICING:

1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. water

Boil these 2 ingredients until when dripped from a spoon, will spin a thread 2 or so inches long or may be less.

Pour over 3 egg whites beaten until they will stand up good. Beat as you pour and until mixture seems to stand really good. Then add 1 teaspoon vanilla. Spread on cake and sprinkle with pecans.
