Grease and flour a 9 x 13 inch cake pan. Mix together 1 cup chopped pecans and 1 cup flaked coconut. Put in bottom of cake pan. Prepare 1 box of German chocolate or devils food cake mix as directed on package. Pour over pecan/coconut mixture.
Cream together 1 stick butter, 1 package (8 ounce) cream cheese and 1 pound powdered sugar. Pour this mixture over cake batter. Bake at 325 degree oven for 1 hour. Let cool in pan for about 20 minutes; turn out onto cake plate. May be served with whipped cream topping.
