1 tsp. baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
2 cups white sugar
2 tbsp. light corn syrup (Karo)
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup pecans

Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk, Combine all ingredients except pecans in a deep saucepan. Cook, stirring often, until mixture forms a firm ball when tested in cold water (244-248°F: on candy thermometer).

Remove from heat; beat until creamy. Add nuts and drop from a teaspoon onto waxed paper.

Cooks Note: Use of a candy thermometer is recommended.
