JAM CAKE 
3 c. sugar
1 1/8 c. shortening
5 1/4 c. flour
1 1/2 c. buttermilk
6 eggs
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 1/2 tsp. allspice
1 1/2 c. jam
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda

Combine all ingredients and pour in greased and floured round cake pans. Bake 50 minutes in a 350 degree oven.

ICING:

1 box brown sugar
4 tbsp. light Karo syrup
2/3 c. canned cream
1 stick butter
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix brown sugar, syrup and cream in a saucepan and boil over moderate heat until a soft ball forms when dropped in cold water. Add butter and vanilla and beat until spreading consistency. Spread over Jam Cake.
