BURNT SUGAR CAKE 
1 3/4 c. flour
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 c. water
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream shortening, add sugar, cream well. Add egg, salt and vanilla. Beat well, add 4 tablespoons burnt sugar syrup, sifted flour, baking powder. Place 1/2 cup of the sugar into a small skillet. Place over low heat until it melts. Then when it begins to smoke, add 1/2 cup of the water. Let boil until a heavy syrup is formed. Cool.

Pour into 2 oiled cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes. Save syrup for frosting.
