SOUR ORANGE PIE
4 eggs, separated and 1 egg white set aside
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1/2 c. sour orange juice
6 tbsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 prepared chocolate graham cracker crust

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat the 4 egg yolks in a medium sized bowl. Add the sweetened condensed milk and sour orange juice. Beat until thick.

In a separate bowl (not a plastic bowl) beat 1 egg white until stiff and fold into milk and orange juice mixture. Pour filling into chocolate crust.

To prepare meringue: Beat the remaining 3 egg whites and cream of tartar until eggs barely hold a peak. Gradually beat in sugar 2 tablespoons at a time until mixture is stiff and forms peaks. Swirl meringue over pie filling making sure to seal filling with meringue. Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes or until meringue is golden brown.

Sour Orange Pie

The very best sour orange pie recipe of the many I've made. Prefer whipped topping over meringue. I do add some orange zest & perhaps a bit of orange liqueur. The zest from my sour oranges is very bitter, so I use the zest from seasonal oranges.

Love the pie! Taste like a key lime pie. Was kind of confused on if you had to bake the pie? I didn't want the meringue topping. But baked the pie for 10 minutes anyway to set the eggs. Let it cool for about an hour on counter top for an hour, then refrigerate for 3 hours or overnight. Yum!
