AMERICAN BEAUTY ROSE CAKE 
2 (1 oz.) bottles red food coloring
3 tbsp. Nestle's Sweet Milk Cocoa (must use Nestle Quik)
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening (I used Crisco)
2 whole eggs, unbeaten
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/4 c. sifted cake flour (Downey)
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vinegar
1 tsp. baking soda

Combine food coloring with chocolate and set aside. Cream shortening and sugar thoroughly. Add eggs and beat well using an electric mixer. Add buttermilk and vanilla to food coloring mixture, blending thoroughly. Sift salt with cake flour and add to the rest of the ingredients, beating well. Stir the rest of the ingredients, beating well. Stir baking soda into vinegar; add last, stirring well.

Bake in greased layers in a 350 degree oven for 25-35 minutes. Makes 2 (8-inch) round or square pans.

FROSTING:

1 c. milk
1 tbsp. cornstarch

1 stick butter
1 stick butter
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Add both together and beat quite a while until thick but fluffy, almost whip cream consistency.
