MRS. H.'S BEAN SOUP 
1 1/2 c. beans
1 to 1 1/2 lb. ham or Kielbasa
1 lg. onion, chopped
2-3 carrots, sliced
1 lg. can tomatoes
1 tsp. chili powder
1 clove garlic
Juice of 1 lemon ( 3 tbsp.)
Salt and pepper to taste

Wash beans thoroughly. Place in large kettle, cover with water and add 2 tablespoons salt. Soak overnight. In the morning, drain. Then add 2 quarts water and ham or Kielbasa. Simmer slowly 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Add rest of ingredients, simmer another 30 minutes or so.

Beans to use (in any combination) to make 1 1/2 cup: Split green peas Split yellow peas Blackeye peas Great Northern beans Pinto beans Garbanzo beans Navy beans Pink beans Red kidney beans Lentils Baby lima beans
