DATE NUT CAKE 
1 c. pitted dates, cut in pieces
1 c. boiling water
1 1/2 c. flour
1 c. chopped nuts
1 egg
1 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda

Pour boiling water over dates and soda. Let cool. Mix sugar, butter and add egg and vanilla. Add baking powder to flour; alternate with date mixture, mixing well. Add nuts and blend. Pour into prepared loaf pan and bake 30-35 minutes at 350 degrees.

FOR SAUCE:

1 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 c. water
3 tbsp. flour
1 tbsp. butter

Cook all ingredients over medium heat, stirring until thick. Add butter and vanilla and pour over warm cake. Cool and serve with whipped cream.
