SHEPHERDS PIE
1 1/4 lbs. ground beef
1/2 lb. Cheddar cheese slices
1 (3 oz.) can tomato paste
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
Pepper & salt to taste
6-8 lg. potatoes, mashed
2 (15 oz.) cans tomato sauce
1/2 onion, chopped
2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

Brown meat with onions and garlic. Drain the meat and set aside. Mix the tomato sauce and tomato paste in a bowl. Whisk out any lumps from the paste. Add a little pinch of baking soda to cut acid (only a little - too much ruins the taste). Add the drained meat and Worcestershire sauce and salt and pepper to the tomato mixture. Cook and mash potatoes with a little butter and milk. Put the tomato mixture into a 13x9 inch lightly greased baking dish. Top with the mashed potatoes. Lay the cheese slices over the top so the entire surface is covered. Bake in 375 degree oven until the cheese melts and browns, about 20 minutes. Great served with cream corn and garlic bread. Serves 4-6.

American cheese may be substituted, Cheddar cheese tastes better.
