GRANDMA KENDALL'S GINGERBREAD 
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter-Crisco
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger
1 c. hot water
1 c. molasses
2 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. salt
1 egg

Cream shortening and sugar together. Add beaten egg and molasses. Sift dry ingredients together and add to egg mixture. Pour in boiling water and beat until smooth. Bake in greased shallow pan (9 x 13 inch) 40 to 45 minutes in moderate oven.

HINT: I serve it with Mom Jones' lemon sauce.

Used in family over 100 years. It really is Grandma Kendall's great- grandmother's recipe.

(MOM JONE'S) LEMON SAUCE:

1/2 c. sugar
1 tbsp. cornstarch
1/8 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. boiling water
2 tbsp. butter
1 1/2 tbsp. lemon juice

Blend sugar, cornstarch, salt and nutmeg. Gradually add boiling water, stirring constantly and cook over low heat 5 minutes or until thick and clear. Add butter and lemon juice.

I serve this with "Grandma Kendall's gingerbread.
