DATE NUT CAKE 
1 c. dates, chopped
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. boiling water
1/2 c. butter
1 tsp. baking soda
1 2/3 c. flour
1/2 c. nuts

Mix chopped dates with boiling water, cool to lukewarm. Cream sugar and butter. Add egg and vanilla; beat well. Combine with date mixture, then add flour sifted with salt and soda. Grease and flour an 8 x 8 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes.

TOPPING:

Cook until thick: 1/2 c. water 1/2 c. dates, chopped 1/2 c. nuts 1 tbsp. butter

Pour over top of cake.
