FRUIT LOAF 
1 recipe for Basic Bread (below)
1/2 c. seedless raisins
1/2 c. chopped walnuts
1/4 c. candied orange peel
1/4 c. chopped candied cherries
1/4 c. confectioner's sugar
1 tbsp. warm water
1 to 2 drops almond or vanilla extract

Make dough for Basic Bread.

Mix together the raisins, walnuts and candied fruit. Knead the mixture into the Basic Bread dough. Shape into 2 (9-inch) greased round pans or ring molds. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 1/4 hours.

FROSTING:

To make the frosting, mix together the confectioner's sugar, warm water and extract. Use to frost the bread while loaves are still warm. Yield: 2 (1 pound) loaves (16 slices each). Approximately 30 calories per slice.

BASIC BREAD:

Combine in mixing bowl, stirring until yeast is dissolved:

1 pkg. or cake yeast
1/4 c. warm water

ADD, beating until smooth:

1/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 c. lukewarm milk
2 c. flour

Then stir in:

2 eggs
1/2 c. melted shortening, cooled

Then add:

2 c. sifted flour

Beat until shiny and smooth. Scrape down batter from sides of bowl. Cover and let rise in warm place until doubled in bulk (about 1 hour). Stir down. Now follow directions above.
