ORANGE BUTTERMILK CAKE
2 lg. oranges
2 c. sugar
1 c. (1/2 lb.) butter
2 eggs
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1 c. buttermilk
1 c. chopped dates
1 c. chopped walnuts
Whipped cream
Fresh orange slices

Grate the orange rind. Halve oranges; squeeze juice into saucepan. Add 1 cup sugar. Add the rind to the butter. Add remaining sugar. Cream until soft and light. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until light.

Beat in the soda, baking powder, and flour alternately with the buttermilk. Mix until smooth. Fold in dates and nuts. Pour into a lightly buttered 13 x 9 inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes.

Meanwhile, bring orange juice and sugar to a boil. Pour boiling syrup over the hot cake as it comes out of the oven. Set cake aside to cool completely before cutting into squares. Top with whipped cream and fresh orange slices.
