FEATHER SPICE CAKE 
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. cloves
1/4 tsp. allspice
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1/3 c. molasses
3/4 c. milk

Sift dry ingredients together 3 times. Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs one at a time and beat thoroughly after each addition. Stir in the molasses and then add the sifted ingredients alternately with the milk.

Bake in 2 greased and floured 9-inch layer cake pans in a moderate oven (375 degrees) until done. Spices may be varied to taste. Some like mace instead of allspice.

I have baking this cake for over 50 years from a recipe book that belonged to my Grandmother. In that recipe it does call for Mace and not Allspice. It is a 'solid' cake, great with chocolate frosting and a cup of tea. For me it is a good memory cake, a piece of history.
