CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES 
2/3 c. soft shortening (part butter)
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. flour*
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped nuts (optional)
1 (6 oz.) pkg. semi-sweet chocolate chips (about 1 1/4 c.)

*For a softer, rounder cookie, add 1/4 cup more flour.

Heat oven to 375°F. Mix shortening, sugars, egg and vanilla. Sift together the flour and other dry ingredients; stir into other mixture. Mix in nuts and chocolate chips.

Drop rounded teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart onto an ungreased baking sheet.

Bake 8 to 10 minutes.
