HOMEMADE TOMATO SAUCE 
1 lg. onion, chopped
1/4 c. olive or vegetable oil
1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
2 tsp. leaf basil, crumbled
Dash of sugar
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
1 (2 lbs., 3 oz.) can Italian style whole tomatoes (with liquid)
1 tsp. salt
1 c. water

Saute onion and garlic in oil in large saucepan until tender. Stir in tomatoes with their liquid, breaking up tomatoes with a spoon, tomato paste, basil, salt, sugar, and water. Bring to boiling; lower heat; simmer, uncovered, stirring frequently for 30 minutes or until sauce has thickened. Freezes well.
