1 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter or shortening
1 tsp. cloves
1/2 c. nuts (optional)
1 1/2 c. sweetened applesauce
1/4 tsp. salt
1 egg
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 c. raisins
2 tsp. baking soda
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder

Cream sugar, shortening and egg until light. Add sauce to creamed mixture, then flour mixture, raisins and nuts. Bake in moderate oven at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Ice with butter icing.
