HOMEMADE CARAMELS 
1 stick butter (1/2 cup)
2 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 c. karo syrup
1 c. sweetened condensed milk
1 tbsp. white vinegar
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix first 5 ingredients. Bring to a boil, boil to soft ball stage on candy thermometer. Remove from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla. Can be put in 8 x 13 inch buttered pan.

Variations: After the above caramels have set in pan you could cut into smaller pieces. Dip in melted candy chocolate (I use the block milk chocolate available by the pound.)

To make "Turtle" put 3 whole pecans on sheet of wax paper, then a tablespoon of the hot caramel from above and top with melted candy chocolate.
