INDIAN LENTIL SOUP 
4 tbsp. butter
3 cloves garlic, crushed
3 c. chopped onion
2 tsp. curry powder
1/4 tsp. powdered cloves
1 tsp. ground cumin
1 tsp. ground cardamom
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1 (24 oz.) can tomatoes with juice
12 oz. lentils
1 tsp. salt

Melt butter in a large, heavy pot and brown the garlic and onions slightly. Add water to the tomatoes to equal 6 1/2 cups. Add tomatoes and all other ingredients to pot. Simmer 1 1/2 hours.

You may adapt the recipe for a crock pot by reducing the amount of water and cooking longer.
