NO SPICE, SPICE CAKE 
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. water
1/3 c. shortening
1 c. raisins
1 tbsp. angostura aromatic bitters
2 c. unsifted flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. walnuts

Combine sugar, water, shortening, raisins and bitters in a saucepan. Bring to a boil for 1 minute. Cool to lukewarm. Stir in remaining ingredients. Bake in 8-inch square cake pan at 350 degrees for approximately 35 minutes.

HINTS: Your batter may be lumpy. This does not produce a fine textured cake, but rather a moist rich one. Cream cheese frosting is excellent on this cake. The angostura bitters are available in most any store that sells liquor.
