MABEL'S PEPPER NUT COOKIES 
1 c. shortening
3 c. molasses
1 tsp. baking soda, dissolved in 2 tbsp. hot water
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. anise powder or oil
1 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. nuts
Enough flour to make a soft ball

Mix together and let stand overnight. Roll in small balls the size of a marble. They are a real hard cookie, a good dunker. Bake 350 degrees until edges are brown. They burn quite easily.
