1/3 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. cloves
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. thick applesauce (unsweetened)
2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. chopped nuts (optional)
3 to 5 pecan halves on top (optional)

Mix all ingredients and bake in loaf pan until springs back when pressed with finger tips at 350 degrees. May add mixed dried or candied fruits in to make a fruit cake (optional).
