Wash grease several times until clear and clean. 5 lbs. grease 3 tbsp. sugar 1 can lye 1/2 c. ammonia 1/2 c. borax Dissolve lye in 1 pint of hot water until thoroughly dissolved. Add borax and ammonia and sugar. When well dissolved, stir slowly in cool grease until like thick cream. Beat, beat, beat! Line a wooden box or pan with wet cloth. Pour in soap when cool. Cool 12-24 hours and then cut in squares. The sugar is optional. It just makes it whiter. |
