DOUGHNUTS 
1 c. sugar
3 1/2 tbsp. shortening, melted
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
3/4 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. nutmeg
Pinch of ginger
3 1/2 c. all-purpose flour (make soft dough)

Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs and vanilla and beat well. Add buttermilk. Sift dry ingredients together and blend in gently. Roll out about 1/2-inch thick. Fry in hot fat (365 degrees) until golden brown.
