DATE CHOCO CHIP CAKE 
1 c. dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 c. boiling water
1 c. sugar
3/4 c. shortening
1 egg
1/2 tsp. vanilla (opt.)
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. walnuts
1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips

Cut up the dates, sprinkle the 1 teaspoon baking soda over the dates and pour the boiling water over the dates and soda. Let stand until fairly cool.

Cream together the 1 cup sugar and the shortening. Add the beaten egg. Sift together the flour, soda and salt and add it alternating with the date mixture. Put in a 9"x13" cake pan.

Sprinkle 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup nuts (cut up) and 1 (6 oz.) package of chocolate chips over the top. Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 35 to 40 minutes. When toothpick inserted comes out clean it is done.
