SPICE BALLS 
3/4 c. soft shortening
1 c. sugar
1/4 c. dark molasses
1 egg
2 1/4 c. flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ginger
1/4 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. cloves
1/4 tsp. baking soda
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
Granulated sugar

Beat shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add molasses and egg; beat well. Sift flour, soda, baking powder and spices together; add to mixture gradually. Cover and chill 2 hours. Heat oven to 375 degrees. Shape dough into balls an inch in diameter. Roll in granulated sugar. Place 2 inches apart on non-stick baking sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes. Makes about 4 dozen.
