OLD - FASHIONED SPICE CAKE | |
1 c. sugar 1/2 c. lard 2 eggs 1/2 c. molasses "Some" salt (1/4 tsp.) 2 tsp. baking soda 1 scant c. hot water (7/8 x.) 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. cloves 2 1/2 c. flour Cream lard; add sugar gradually, creaming well. Add beaten eggs, then molasses. Add part of dry ingredients (sifted together) alternately with hot water until all are used. Pour into well greased layer cake pans and bake at 350 degrees until done (25 to 30 minutes). Let stand in pans for 5 minutes, then turn out and frost with boiled or other preferred frosting. The batter may seem thin but don't add any more flour. It makes a very light cake. |
