BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLES 
3 qt. cucumbers, sliced
3 med. onions, sliced
4 c. sugar
2 lg. cloves garlic
3 c. vinegar dark vinegar
2 tsp. celery seed
1 tsp. turmeric
4 tbsp. salt
2 qt. ice cubes or crushed ice

Wash and slice cucumbers and onions, garlic, mix cucumbers and onions with salt and ice. Let stand 3 hours. Drain off water and ice. Then remove garlic. Combine sugar, spices, and vinegar. Heat just to boil. Add cucumber and onion slices and heat 5 minutes. Pack loosely into clean hot pint jars. Adjust lids. Process in rolling water bath for 5 minutes.
