GRANDMOTHER'S ORANGE SLICE CAKE 
1 c. butter (or shortening)
2 c. sugar
4 eggs (one at a time)
3 1/2 c. cake flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. buttermilk
8 oz. box chopped dates
8 oz. bag orange gum candy, chopped
1 c. Angel Flake coconut
2 c. nuts (pecans, etc.)
2 tsp. grated orange rind

Cream butter or shortening and sugar; add eggs one at a time. Roll dates, chopped orange candy, nuts and dates in 1/2 cup of flour. Sift soda, salt and rest of flour. Add buttermilk and flavoring alternately with coconut, candy, dates and nuts. Cook about 2 1/2 or 3 hour in slow oven about 250 degrees.

TOPPING:

2 c. powdered sugar
1 c. orange juice

Mix well and put over cake while hot and let cool completely in pan before removing.
