SWEET AND SOUR CABBAGE SOUP 
3 (8 oz.) cans tomato sauce
12 c. water (more may be needed)
5 or 6 garlic cloves
3 or 4 lg. onions, peeled and sliced
1 to 1 1/2 c. dark brown sugar
2 tbsp. salt
1 lb. ground lean beef
1 lb. ground pork or 1 1/2 lbs. meaty spareribs
4 or 5 lbs. head cabbage
1 c. barley
1/2 tsp. oregano
3 bay leaves
4 tbsp. chopped parsley
1 tsp. pepper
1 tsp. curry powder

Place tomato sauces and water into large non reactive pot, bring to a SIMMER. ADD garlic, onions, 1 cup of sugar, salt, SIMMER 10 minutes. Crumble meats into pot until large lumps are broken. Continue to simmer.

Quarter cabbage and slice around steam. Add to kettle. Add barley, herbs and pepper. Add more water if needed. Simmer 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Serve with sour dough or French bread. Serves 8 to 10 generously.
