WHOLE WHEAT NUT BREAD 
2/3 c. chopped pitted dates
1/2 c. chopped figs
1/2 c. chopped nuts
2 c. flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 c. whole wheat flour
1/4 c. packed brown sugar
1 egg, beaten
1/2 c. honey
1 1/3 c. milk
3 tbsp. melted shortening
1 1/2 tsp. grated orange rind

Mix fruits and nuts with 2 tablespoons of the flour. Sift together remaining flour, baking powder, salt and soda; stir in whole wheat flour. Thoroughly combine brown sugar and egg; blend in honey, milk, shortening and orange rind. Add to dry ingredients, mixing just until flour is moistened. Fold in fruits and nuts. Turn into greased 9x5x3 inch loaf pan. Bake in 350 degree gas oven 1 to 1 1/4 hours. Cool before removing from pan. Makes 1 loaf.
